Y’all, raise your hand if 2020 has been the most difficult year for you yet?
As the coronavirus pandemic continues to rage on while taking away loved ones (RIP Nanny and Aunt Cathy – both early on victims of this virus), disrupting daily life and causing increased worry, I can say without a doubt, this year has most definitely been a difficult year for me.
If you haven’t been in therapy this year with all the added craziness, then you get a gold star 😉
My ass made sure my therapist had FaceTime/Zoom so she could listen to all my problems. All while on every social media outlet, people reported their problems and the world’s problems. Also don’t forget, they also graced us with their expert opinions on all things 2020.
FACT: I’ve been in therapy for most of my life and I am cool with people knowing it. If you personally know me, I am an open book. Have a question? Ask.
I believe many of us walk in the same shoes; however, only some of us are brave enough to ask others to help lace them up.
I am a HUGE advocate of people receiving mental health help and I hold absolute zero judgment for you doing you. I believe receiving “help” is a sign of strength, not a sign weakness as our society has programmed us to think. Like CBD, it is crazy to me there is still even a stigma out there.
I mean who doesn’t want to go plop down on a comfy couch, propped them feet up, and unload all your problems on someone else?! Your significant other, family member(s) or a best friend might actually thank you that they don’t have to deal with your crazy ass all the time – selfishly giving you the advice they know you want to hear, not the hard truth you need to hear.
The reasons I have been going to therapy has not changed this year (Anxiety, Grief and Stress) — instead 2020 has just amplified my issues and threw in a few curve balls along just to keep me on my toes!
Perhaps some of you, just like me, lost your go-to coping mechanisms as the result of safety restrictions that were put in place. The pandemic basically forced us into inactivity – both physically and emotionally – which in turn creates or amplifies your mental health issues.
When schools shut down for the longest spring break ever and the gym doors closed, I wasn’t able to go to my happy place to blow off steam. Sure I could have loaded up 100lbs into my double stroller and hit the pavement, but really y’all… running with kids is not fucking therapeutic or mentally healthy for me. Selfishly I like my “me time” to be ME ONLY.
Social media helped to feed my mind into insanity some days too. I have such a tangled web of a relationship with these platforms. While I want to delete it all from my life, I also love that I have it in my life. When you are a NOMAD & a SAHM without a tribe, sometimes I felt like social media was my only connection to people and a social life. I love being able to keep up with friends and family and social media makes you feel like you were sharing life’s moments with them. Fucking weird and sad, right?!
Social media: both your best friend and worst enemy simultaneously!
So if you are dealing with mental health issues like me, don’t let the emotional aftermath of this year be understated. Go get some help! Speaking to a therapist can help you sort through the trauma, grief and any other issues that you have going on. We all deserve to find some peace and calm — especially now.
